Peter Doig. Untitled. 2013

Untitled by Peter Doig
In this artwork I've noticed that it's angle was directly in front of the viewer instead of below or above eye level. The Focal points would be no doubt the man sitting on the bench and the bird flying above head. Thinking about lines it seems all the lines are in approximate symmetry because they all move in the same direction from left to right. With the man sitting on, what I assume is, the bench, the man is a large dark form while his hat is the small white form to balance this asymmetrical artwork. The artist, in my opinion, pulls more focus to the hat on the man's head which advert I used the Rule of Third to find out the interesting points of the artwork which are the man and the bird within this piece. Now that I think about it there is a balance of color throughout the painting from the lake, the edges of the painting, the bird (positive space), the negative space (the landscape background), and the man himself (also positive space). The scale of this artwork would be that birds and human beings can be that size in real life depending on the position of the viewer. In my opinion it gives off a sense of rough flowing balance because of the color choice and texture of the painting. It's true what was said about the Rule of Odds I can't help but feel like this artwork would be more interesting if it had at least one more object of interest in it.

  1. Good observations Aaron, but this is not a collage, it's a print. If you are confused about the different forms, please bring it up in class on Friday and we can review.
