Blog #3

This piece of artwork is called "Stay Ahead of the Game" created by Joe Brainard which is a drawing made with cut and pasted printed paper, ink markers, graphite and gouache on paper. It was made in 1975 and I found it on the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection website. This is a 2D drawing with primary colors such as yellow and blue. Also there are several different principles of designs seen in this drawing that represents composition since he arranged the shapes into a certain position which makes a good piece of work. In addition, the artist used shapes like squares and circles to form unity because all the shapes can be put together to make up this unique design. He also used visual rhythm since you can see the repetition of colors and shapes in the middle piece of work within the bingo cards, the yellow face and the pattern of colors around it. It also has visual weight of elements meaning that it has a symmetrical balance because if it's folded in half both sides would resemble one another within each color, shape, size and position. The artist mainly used a focal point which is the piece of work located in the center of the cards and the yellow face in the middle that  would directly grab the viewer's/audience attention. While observing the drawing I  notice the angle of it is an eye level viewpoint. I say this because when it is being looked at its at an even position with my eyes which cause me to look straight at it rather than looking up or down. In other words this drawing has several different types of principle elements that creates a unique piece of work and meaning.

  1. Very good Stephanie, and a great example of a collage. Please be careful when you are writing- you call it a drawing several time- a drawing and a collage are different forms of art.
