Innerscape 1 by Myung Sook Kim -- Homework#4

This piece by Myung Sook Kim is called Innerscape 1 and it is located in the Korean Art Museum Association. One can see that it depicts many lines that look as if they were strands of hair. These lines travel in many directions across the paper and make your eyes follow them in a flowing way. This drawing is made up of contour lines, giving it more of an eerie vibe to it. The way the lines are drawn, one can tell that there is a lot of motion caused by the vertical lines, as well as all the stray strands of hair. The hairs themselves create cross hatching when intersecting with one another. The cross hatching then create a visual layering between the strands. This can be seen by the negative space in between the strands of hair that is the white background. This repetition of strands of hair creates a good rhythm in the piece. One of the most important parts of this drawing is the shading used. Without it, it would be a bunch of lines drawn across a piece of paper, but with the shading the realistic aspect is brought out. I can tell after attempting to draw a simple box and vase that it must have taken time and effort to create this drawing. At first it may look like a simple drawing of strands of hair, but all the detail in the shading and the way the hair seems to be moving would have to take a while to complete.

  1. good work in your description, BUT be careful of the definition of contour lines- they are used just to show the outside edged of shapes, here the lines (just lines!) are being used to make the texture and depth as you point out.
