Hw post 3

The collage image I chose was selected from the MoMa collection, designed by Ad Reinhardt. This collage was created in 1940 made out of cut-and-paste printed paper on board. There are many design principles applied in this collage. One of the design principles found in this work is a balance of unity and variety, differences that provide interest and contrast. The variety I'm noticing is the different cut shapes that are many different sizes and the unity is found in the creation of this image to seem to fit it all together.  There doesnt seem to be a focal point in this collage, the attention of this piece is all around causing the eye to move across the art work. There is a visual rhythm found here, being that the rectangular shapes give the impression the piece is vertical. Making the eye look from top to bottom. The angle of this collage is of course eye level. This piece also seems to create a border with the colors used around the edges give us a heavier feel. There is also a approximate symmetry going on in this piece. I would say its even on both sides giving it balance but the shapes are not exactly the exact size. There is an idea of repetition found in this image with the same use of shapes just placed differently in the collage. I feel the emphasis of this collage may be the middle due to the shapes pasted together that seems like layers.

  1. excellent example, and you noted the principles of design very well. Also, this assignment was posted late.
