Museum Essay #1

It was fun to look around all the art works in one place. I especially liked painting. So, I spend most of the time for painting areas.  There were several paintings that got me attention. The artist’s names were Paul Gauguin and Camille Pissarro. The title of the painting of Gauguin is Two Tahitian Women, 1899. When I looked at his painting, the first thing I liked was colors. I could see primary colors which are red, blue and yellow. The colors looked very clear and bright. Half naked body with green, yellow and red color recognized me that this place is hot area which is called Tahiti. There are two half naked woman standing. The two figures have clear outlines following body shapes. The lines look circular shapes. The style of his painting is simple. He did not use various range of colors in one area which was my favorite part. Two figures are big enough to fill the background. Two figure’s faces are darker than body part with no smiling. They look unhappy. The negative space is filled with forest.  There is some part of bright yellow color in background.  It might be sunlight toward figures.
Unlike Gauguin, Camille Pissarro used different type of painting skill. The title of painting is Two Young Peasant Women, 1891-92. The painting looked more detail and delicate than Gauguin’s panting. I also liked this type of skill. The artist filled with dots into entire panting. It looked like he spent a lot of time for it. The painting is describing peaceful country scene. There is broad field as background. There are two figures sitting face to face at the front. The clothes they are wearing look very poor. The trees show perspective. Trees are repeating and become smaller to show distance.  By using dots, the panting shows implied line that looks blur but it looks beautiful.  Two figures are focal point with big size compare to background. There is also light between two figures that helps focus on the figures. I can also see asymmetrical balance. On the left, there is a young lady who is smaller than the lady who is sitting at the right side. There were also trees on the left. On the right, there is taller old lady alone filled the part.
I liked these two paintings the most. These two painting are from French. The period they painted are also close.  However, they used totally different skill of painting, but they all expressed well with their own different style.  I realized that painting is not just copy from other things.  Creating my own style of art would play an important role as an artist.

  1. Hanna- great observations BUT the assignment was to write abut works that were 500+ years apart- these two were made very close to each other, only 7 years apart!
