“Mirror (Blue)” 1998 Salle David
I came this painting across on the Google Art Project Museum. We talked about lines and shades in class and this piece of art has great examples of shading and lines. To start off the drawing is a type collage, it is divided into three sections. The top left part is composed of apples; the painter uses the rule of odds using a number of five apples. There is horizontal line separating the grey and purple and it seems like it’s to show that the grey color is the wall and the purple can be the table. There are organic shapes since the apples are roundish. I see that the painter shaded the apples shadow to show there is type of light. The apple is composed of primary colors, red and yellow. Those two colors create warm colors. Directly in the bottom of the apples, there is a man looking at himself in the mirror. That part of the painting is one color and it seems to be sepia. To me that color portrays a sense of a dark emotion. To me the focal point in that section is the mirror, since he’s staring at the mirror so his eyes reflect back starring at you.  There is implied light since the painter shades almost everything in the painting. The light’s reflection is where his pants are whitish; it’s lighter than the overall painting. The last piece in the right side is composed of squiggly and hatching lines. The lines repeat and create geometric shapes. There are primary colors like red and blue and the over all color that is used is blue in a monochromatic form. Overall, this piece of art has rule of thirds because when it’s divided the lines intersect on the apples and on the back of the mans head. To me the overall drawing creates a sense that there is no focal point on the whole thing. The fact that each section is different colors my eyes go around observing each one of them. If this drawing was to be cut in half it would be asymmetrical since the drawings don’t correspond to each other. Now after I spent some time drawing I examine the work of art more in depth. I look to see if there is some type of implied light, where there is shading going on and what the focal point is.

  1. Brenda- I think you did BP # 3 again- Blog Post # 4 was about drawing and drawing techniques. You have done the same assignment as last time, about principles of design. Check BB if you are confused about assignments, and try to stay on the schedule.
