Mysterious Hand and The Mysterious Incident -- Homework #2

This painting on the wall of Hunter College illustrates a simple hand in white. The organic shape of the human hand makes it different from anything else on that wall. Also, compared to images of quickly painted hands, this seems to be very accurate unlike most turkey hands. Where this hand is located is in the corner of the terrace, where in average would hold most of the shade in this area. This hand, due to it's color, pops out from that shadow, reflecting the light to make it's own presence more prominent. It could almost be complimentary with the gray background acting as negative space and the white acting as positive space. The shapes of the rocks in the negative space are also organic and the vertical line in the middle acts as a divider. This 2D painting, though pretty much flat, has much texture to it. All the different rocks embedded into the wall can be felt, as well as the rocks hidden by the white paint. You can see how on the left side, it's the print of a right hand instead of a left hand. Naturally the eye would follow the picture as whoever made this would be standing left to this hand. The window in that direction disproves this because there wouldn't be enough space for this painting to be made at the angle it seems to be have made. The person must have been standing dead center of the line, crossing their arms allowing them to print the right hand while leaving enough space between the fingers and filling the area where the center of the palm would otherwise not touch the wall.

This photograph shows an incident that occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 17th. Many visual elements can be found right away from just taking a glance. One can see implied lines of the vehicles all pointing to one place, putting the attention on the one building where the smoke is coming out of. Many shapes can be seen as well. From the geometric cars and trucks, to the small organic details like the spec in the sky and the people walking around. The actual light can be seen all over. All these lights create many areas of shade and shadow. From these shadows shapes were created like the triangle in the center of the photo. Excluding that triangle, all the shaped area and also the blue sky are considered negative space while the building and the vehicles are positive space. The depth off this photo layers the importance first which is the bright scene. Another great thing about this picture is all the colors that can be seen and how they have been expressed. Colors are coming from the siren lights, the brownstone buildings, and the many streetlights. Many red and yellow colors are prominent and the brown buildings are reflecting these colors, slightly tinting them the same colors. This make this photo also analogous. All these colors are also warm where the eyes are drawn and cool beyond the buildings and looking at the sky. As the normal New York City building is rough, one can imagine how it would feel to walk and brush against these buildings. One can also imagine the sounds being emitted from the people and the sirens.

  1. Harold you have two great images but please review your notes on the visual elements as you are making some mistakes-or describing them inaccurately. For example, the second photo has areas of blue and red/pink- these are not analogous colors as you describe them. Also, in the first picture, there is no negative space- that wall is a wall. Ask me if you need clarification.
