Blog post #3

(Was unable to directly add picture here)
(On the websites provided, this was the most fitting to be a collage as there were no actual collages)

by Rene Portocarrero, 1952

The unity in this painting is all the triangles and circles scattered in a vertical line together. The variety in this is the different colored and angled rectangles to create the triangles. It is using certain shapes to make other shapes. The repetition would be the lines in some places in the same position as others at different parts. The rhythm seems jagged, this is not a calm painting. From the colors to the object placement, the feeling it gives me is troubling. The balance lies within the colors and placement. All of the objects are placed in a vertical line and the same three colors are used repeatedly: yellow, red, and brown. The focal point would be the large triangle above the other triangle from the bottom. It is the largest shape in this painting and there are more lines surrounding it, bringing your sight to it. As for proportion, there are more larger objects than small objects. The smaller objects are more nearing the top, while the larger ones are near the bottom. In a way, this entire painting can be seen as a triangle shape, which could be the shape in element forms. The colors are considered warm and the rhythm is erratic, so this painting could represent the artist's anger. Perhaps not anger, but there are many things going on at once in this painting. It could represent the artist's busy life. However this painting certainly is not calm, so something must have been going on in the artist's life.

  1. Excellent work identifying the principles of design in this work, however it is a painting, not a collage- which was required for this assignment.
