Leonardo Drew:

The artist I was assigned to talk about is Leonardo Drew who is an artist well known for his sculptures that are very interesting to observe due to his unique designs and his own ways of experimentation. While watching the video he began talking about how he doesn’t really know what his artwork is about so instead he just let the work find its own way. In the video he explained that his artwork is made through the years of his own experimentation which led him to create a piece he called “Number Eight”. This piece is shown above on the right hand corner which is made out of strings and anything else you can think of which are tangled all together to create a monstrous piece of art. He stated that “The reason why I name my pieces of artwork by numbers is for the viewer to have enough room to find themselves in the work since the work is a mirror”. Not only does he mention the three areas of importance in his artwork but he focuses on having each area of importance relate to one another so they can look like they are speaking to each other. By this he means that each area of his art has gradation going on and his viewers would be able to see it throughout his work. Most of Drew’s work are huge sculptures made out of brand new materials such as wood that he buys on his own. On the other hand, Drew mentions one issue about art which is fine objects and how he doesn’t like to use them in his work. When he buys the new pieces of wood he tends to wash, burn and transform them into the way he wants them to look to form different types of designs for his work. He also transforms the new materials through a process of decay and the exposure to weather meaning the intensity of heat to form the shapes of each piece. Throughout the video I like how Drew expresses what he feels about his art work and how he admits that just because his sculptures are big that doesn’t mean they are successful.  But in my opinion I think he is very creative since he uses his own materials and just throw things together to form a whole which turns out to be something very brilliant and outstanding. I like how he has the opportunity to feel what he could do to create an art piece at his best rather than just thinking it out. What I mean by this is that he has the talent for coming up with ideas from his experiments in art to make what he wants possible. In other words, Leonardo Drew’s work has made me look at art differently due to the way he explained how he does his work and how sometimes art doesn’t always have to have a meaning or a representation, art can just be anything.
