Mask of Balzac Smiling, Auguste Rodin

Smile II, Jean Dubuffet

I want to place this show in the entrance of the main building.  It could be the perfect place that many students can see it because there are a lot of students have to pass to get in or out of the school during the day.
My theme is smile. The reason why I choose this theme is to be smile. I sometimes wondered how often we are smile. When I am taking the subway or bus, I used to observe people’s faces. I realized that there were many people had an expressionless faces. I could even see it from students at school. I saw many students were sitting at the benches or cafeteria. They seemed to look tired or think about something. They looked concerning about what they have to do. The purpose of my show is to make students be smile.  When they get into the school, I want them start with smile.
As the curator of this show I picked these pieces because I wanted to make students be smile.  The first art work is The Smile from Louise Bourgeois. This is 2D which is drawing. One girl is looking at the viewer with smiling. Her face is described as simple. Her face and arms are described as circular shapes. There is value that becomes lightened into the figure. It shows emphasis. I can feel innocent smile from her. The second art work is Fluxpost(Smiles) from George Maciunas. This is photographs which is 2D. It shows smiling with different person. It is more realistic than first art work. I can see someone is naturally smiling. I can also see someone is trying to make smile. Other person is making smile with their hands. This art work shows unity with smile, but there is variety with different way of smile. I can also see rhythm with repetition of different faces. The third art work is Mask of Balzac Smiling from Auguste Rodin. It is 3D which is sculpture. It was made of bronze. I can see the wrinkles especially around mouth. This usually shows when people are smiling. The figure is lightly smiling but I can feel deep smiling from inside. The fourth art work is Nadia.Smiling face from Henri Matisse. It used printmaking technique which is aquatint. The face is very simple. There are a lot of negative shapes. The figure does not have hair, but I can notice that it is a lady by the lips. The lips are small and thick like lady. It is simple but it is easy to focus on smiling on the face. I can feel coy smile from the figure. The fifth art work is Smile II from Jean Dubuffet. It is Lithograph which is type of printing process. Unlike the Fourth art work, the negative space is barely seen. The figure is almost filled in the paper. I cannot see the gender of the figure. There is no hair and ears. Lips are described as big smiling. I can feel warm smile from the figure.
Each art work has different smile. They also used different technique to describe it. However, when i put them together, it makes me feel good with different smiles. I believe that students also can feel it.

  1. Hanna I am smiling just looking at your post and reading your great idea! Some studies say that smiling is contagious- and this show would be a wonderful addition to our school!
