Blog Post 8

Along with Sumsad Akter I went to The Queens Museum of Art. It is a small museum in the Flushing Meadows Corona Park area. It was really fun to see and truly impressive. The two main attractions for me are the Tiffany collection and Panorama, I would say I am really impressed by these art collections. The art pieces were something more than my expectations. I have been in Flushing Meadows Corona Park for so many times, especially in summer time but I have never noticed this museum before .They do not have so much art collections in it but you can spend hours just examining the Panorama of the City of New York. I did not even know that they have this Panorama in the museum therefore when I saw that, I was totally surprised. It's gigantic and they really did an excellent job documenting all the boroughs of New York City. It even moves with airplanes. I spent probably half an hour in this one room walking around pointing out the different buildings, bridges, parks, landmarks. It was fun to see so many known places such as Empire State Building, World Trade Center even my house.  I felt like it is a tangible form of google earth. The Panorama was built by a team of 100 people working for the architectural model. In other words I would say the indoor model of the five boroughs of New York is just fabulous. Besides the Panorama, the museum features few small rooms with some other art installations. The Tiffany glass upstairs is also something interesting to look at. They have videos showing how the glasses are made. The collection consists of windows, lamps, and related objects. I really enjoyed the Tibetan exhibition as the paintings were inspirational and engaging. Specifically, “Demoness of Tibet” has really amazed me. Beautifully drawn, a city full of houses, heels in a human body. This painting must have a story behind it. According to the description of this painting, it is a “traditional image depicting Tibet’s cultural and political conversion and the establishment of Buddhism as the state religion.” All in all, the museum itself is beautiful, very open and welcoming. Honestly, I was not that much interested in art galleries but this class has changed my understanding of art and made me interested in it. Now I can see the story behind every piece of art and the messages of the artists through this beautiful works.
